From 1st January 2008, the MSA Marshals Grading Scheme has undergone a significant change. As part of the Volunteers in Motorsport (ViM) initiative, a working group proposed a revised grading scheme which was introduced to Race Marshals at the beginning of 2007, Rally & Cross Country Marshals are included from 2008. The MSA grading scheme now also includes provisions for Kart and Speed marshals to be registered. Multi-tasking approach This scheme provides a framework to bring greater consistency across the disciplines. At some events, we have a limited pool of marshals to select from, this means that many marshals will need a greater range of skills - the scheme reflects this multi-tasking approach. However, the scheme will not require anyone to perform duties they do not wish to, as we recognise that each person has their own preferred duties. Personal Record Cards Personal Record Cards will be issued bi-annually to all marshals. These cards provide the opportunity, for maintenance or upgrade purposes, to note attendance signatures (including at training events) and for an overall record of experience and skills gained. Overview for all grades 1) Signatures on Personal Record Cards will be given for event or training day attendance 2) To maintain an existing grade, marshals should complete a minimum of four events per year in that grade and at least one training session for that grade every two years 3) A new Cadet Marshal grade commenced in 2008. The Cadet grade is open to all marshals between their 11th and 16th birthdays. N.B. Only organising clubs who have a MSA Club Child Protection Officer may use Cadet Marshals 4) People who have undertaken an MSA-endorsed Motorsport Incident Marshal course at college or university will be credited with their attendance signature for the events at which they have marshalled 5) The training days will be tailored to each discipline and the competencies needed by marshals at each grade - details of training days are available on www.volunteersinmotorsport.co.uk 6) There is no minimum or maximum time period youy must spend in a grade before seeking upgrading 7) Existing attendance signatures remain valid. Additional signatures should be collected and accompany an upgrade requests 8) Training Day signatures should be obtained from the MSA Trainer. You may want the Trainer to comment (on your Personal Record Card) on any particular skills you have acquired and demonstrated 9) Trainees will now be recognised on the MSA database and will be issued with an MSA registration card and number Details of the discipline specific grading schemes and upgrade paths are available on
